If the Atonement connects Christ to every human life, then that connection should run both ways. This chapter suggests that it does, and that we already have a name for the other direction.

## More Than an Impersonal Force

Scripture teaches that “the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil.”[Moroni 7:16](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/moro/7?lang=eng&id=p16#p16); compare [John 1:9](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/nt/john/1?lang=eng&id=p9#p9), “the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world,” and [Doctrine and Covenants 84:46](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/84?lang=eng&id=p46#p46). [↓](#note-1) The Light of Christ may not merely be an impersonal moral force placed inside humanity. It may be the reciprocal side of Christ’s universal connection to us through the Atonement.In Latter-day Saint teaching, the *Light of Christ* is distinct from the Holy Ghost: it is given to every person as conscience and moral light, whether or not they have heard of Christ. Restoration scripture also gives it a cosmic scope, “the light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed” ([Doctrine and Covenants 88:6–13](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/88?lang=eng&id=p6-p13#p6), especially verse 13). The model does not need to deny that cosmic dimension. Its suggestion is about the *personal* side of the light as human beings experience it: conscience, prompting, and the pull toward the good. Justin Martyr’s “seed of the Word” is a close early parallel; see “Echoes in Early Christianity.” [↓](#note-2)

## The Other Side of the Connection

Because Christ is connected to every human life in Gethsemane, every human being is also connected to Him. What we experience as

*   conscience,
*   moral awareness,
*   spiritual prompting,
*   comfort,
*   warning,
*   compassion,
* or an inward pull toward goodness

may be Christ reaching us through that relationship. When we feel the Light of Christ, we may in some sense be experiencing Christ’s consciousness touching ours.

He is not merely observing our lives from a distance. He is participating in them through the Atonement.

## Never Forced

And because agency remains absolute, He never forces the response. He can invite. He can warn. He can strengthen. He can comfort. He can nudge. But we remain free to accept or reject Him. Mormon draws the same line in the passage that introduces the Spirit of Christ: everything that “inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ.”[Moroni 7:16](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/moro/7?lang=eng&id=p16#p16). [↓](#note-3) The verbs are *invite* and *persuade*, never *compel*.**An objection.** Consciences differ across people and cultures, and sometimes they mislead. If the Light of Christ is Christ reaching us, why is it so varied? The model answers from agency: the light is offered to everyone, but how it is received, attended to, and shaped is up to each person, and the revelation itself says the Spirit enlightens those who “hearken” ([Doctrine and Covenants 84:46](https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/84?lang=eng&id=p46#p46)). A pull that is never forced can also be ignored, dulled, or misread. [↓](#note-4)

## Two Directions, One Relationship

The same relationship works in both directions. Our actual lives participate in what Christ experiences in Gethsemane. Christ’s experience in Gethsemane participates in what we experience as the Light of Christ.

## Like Entanglement

This relationship resembles entanglement, not in the sense that LDS theology is literally quantum mechanics, but in the sense that two events separated by enormous distances in time can belong to one deeper relational structure.

In physics, entangled particles can be separated by great distances while still belonging to a single shared state; neither can be fully described apart from the other. In this model, Gethsemane and a moment of conscience in your own life are something like that. They are far apart in time, yet they belong to one relationship, and neither is fully understood without the other.**Doing the physics carefully.** Entanglement is real and well tested; the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics recognized experiments by Alain Aspect, John Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger confirming that entangled particles show correlations no local “hidden instructions” can explain ([Nobel Prize announcement](https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/2022/summary/)). But three features limit the analogy. Entanglement does not let one particle *send a message* to the other; the correlations show up only when results are compared afterward. Ordinary entanglement links particles across *space*; the analogy here stretches the idea across two thousand years of time. And entanglement is fragile, usually destroyed by interaction with the environment. Read the analogy for one feature only: two separated things can share a single state that neither has alone. Whatever reaches us in conscience is not a physical signal from the first century. [↓](#note-5)
